In a nutshell, what I mean by Organized Unschooling is: not ignoring YOUR needs for organization. I am a control-freak, always have been (though, with each passing day of living an unschooling life, I have felt my control issues lessen & lessen). I like spreadsheets. I like having a “plan” (however loose of a plan it may be, I like feeling like I have one). So, I give myself everything I need. The key — I force none of it on my children. That’s not to say that my children don’t ever do activities that I have planned. The KEY is that I do not FORCE them to do any of it. If they’re not interested — fine, I drop it.
I submitted an article to Secular Homeschooling Magazine in which I describe the whole idea & practice of “organized unschooling” in detail. Deborah said she really liked the article and it appeared in a recent issue!!! Woo Hoo!! Be sure to check it out (it’s an awesome magazine)!
Encourage everything; Force nothing.
